However, he would write and appear in his autobiographical documentary Val (2021) and experience the biggest comeback of his career by reprising the role that made him a star, "Iceman" in the massively successful Найкращий стрілець: Маверік (2022). Throughout the late 2000's and 2010's he would be in numerous direct-to-video duds and would tragically be diagnosed with throat cancer which took away his voice.
However, following the notoriously nightmarish shoot on Острів доктора Моро (1996) and his slow but willing departure from commercial blockbusters, Kilmer would appear in several critically praised but financially unsuccessful films which accumulated cult followings over time, such as The Salton Sea (2002), Wonderland (2003) and Поцілунок навиліт (2005).
Though critically mixed, this film was the highest grossing live-action film of 1995 and boosted Val Kilmer's stardom considerably as he would appear in the better-received crime epic, Сутичка (1995) that same year.
